Mindful Birthing

Mindfulness based childbirth and parenting courses ~ London and Surrey

Mindfulness Based Childbirth and Parenting

The Mindfulness Based Childbirth and Parenting (MBCP) course is akin to the original MBSR course, developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and indeed Nancy Bardacke has attended courses with him. However, the MBCP course goes further and makes explicit how mindfulness is applicable for pregnancy, birth and parenting. The course prepares expectant couples for the psychological and physical experiences of pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and being new parents.  A variety of mindfulness skills are practised within the class and these can be used both to manage the intense sensations of giving birth and the day to day experiences of caring for a new-born baby.

Nancy Bardacke who is both an experienced midwife and mindfulness teacher and is currently working as an assistant clinical professor at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Centre. Along with her colleague Dr Larissa Duncan they are researching the potential benefits of the course.

Nancy Bardacke also works closely with her colleagues here in the UK, namely Dr Maret Dymmond who is based at the Oxford Mindfulness Centre (Oxford University) and Dr Eluned Gold at the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (Bangor University).

The OMC is also the only UK based training provider for course facilitators and practitioners undertake an intensive year long course under the supervision of Dr Maret Dymond. To quote the OMC website:

“The initial evidence is very compelling, with reported changes not only in the experience of childbirth, but also in the relationship with the baby afterwards”.

NHS midwives based in Oxford deliver the course, under the guidance of Dr Sian Warriner. However, it is not currently offered through the NHS in other areas of the country. Here is a short article which was published in the British Journal of Midwifery, written by Dr Sian Warriner, Dr Maret Dymond and Dr Mark Williams:
